Parish Letter From 6 St Anne’s Road Think about it – the Christian church is the world’s largest movement – active in almost every country on the planet; in the places most affected by climate change and in those most responsible for causing it. Imagine the potential if the worldwide church were truly to recover the biblical mandate to care for creation. The Bible’s first great commission is God’s call on humanity to rule over creation as God’s stewards. This call still applies; in Romans 8:19 we are told that ‘Creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed’ or, put another way, the world is waiting for the church to recover its mission. The worldwide church is God’s answer to the global environmental crisis. At St George’swe hope to become a partner church in a scheme managed by A Rocha UK in which we commit to incorporating the biblical vision of creation care into our worship, teaching and mission of the church. In fact we are already well along the path with our recycling projects, our support of the Fair Trade movement and our responsible use of resources like electricity. The ‘Living Lightly’ tips in each issue of this magazine are baby steps along the way. As we explored the proposals in A Rocha’s scheme we discovered that we were in tune with their objectives and the PCC has given its approval to allow us to move towards partnership. We have no oasis of a green churchyard but there is still much we can do if only to encourage each other. Saving the world is a challenge to all of us and cannot be left to the conservation movements or the government. Please do what you can for we are all answerable to God.
