Frankwell Historic Weekend Friday 20 - Sunday 22 May, 2011
Friday 20 May The exhibitions in St George's church raised a lot of interest during the weekend. They included material from the Shropshire Archives about Frankwell, documents relating to the founding of St George's church in 1832 and photographs of houses, shops, people and events from businesses and members of the local community. Shropshire Family History Society were on hand to show resources and advise on matters of family history research.
Saturday 21 May A very popular guided walk through Frankwell with Shrewsbury's Town Crier set off from St George's on Saturday morning. The walk included a visit to Millington's Hospital founded in 1748 by James Millington. Local historian, David Trumper filled the church with an appreciative auidence as he showed many wonderful images of old Frankwell, Porthill, Copthorne and The Mount. Thanks to the efforts of many willing volunteers from St George's refreshments were available throughout the weekend to all visitors.
A large group joined the guided walk by Frankwell Quay and the riverside with Ron Iremonger, combining local and natural history of the area. The afternoon events continued with an illustrated talk by David Trumper focusing on Carnivals, floods and festivities - people and events in Frankwell - which brought back many memories. Each day ended with Book of Common Prayer evening prayer.
Sunday 22 May The congregation and visitors to St George's experienced a Victorian Sunday service with readings from the King James Bible, a Victorian style sermon and hymns of the period. A number of the congregation dressed in period costumes (see above). The Archives and 'People's photo exhibition' were open for viewing all day and many memories were refreshed and happy times re-lived during the weekend. THANK YOU to all who gave their time so generously and shared photos and memories with the Frankwell community.
